Non-Exclusive Side of Music
Music libraries are one of many ways to obtain licensing. I decided to check out the non-exclusive side of the house for my own music. I previously wrote about the pros and cons of dealing with non-exclusive publishing. We will dive into a couple of music libraries that I am currently working with.
Taking the First Step
There are a number of non-exclusive music libraries out there. How do you choose the right one? Research, research and more research. My goal is to work with several non-exclusive music libraries as along as I agree to their terms.
With each of the libraries you work with, you will need to provide the following
- The music. Select your best music to add into the library. Even if your music isn’t perfect, I would consider adding it. Be sure that your music is copyrighted and registered with a Performance Rights Organization (PRO).
- High quality music (MP3 and WAV files). Export high quality MP3 and WAV files. Libraries will confirm which type of files that they work with. Remember, your music could be placed in movies or advertisements so I would recommend good sound quality. Consider also providing the instrumental without backing vocals.
- Metadata. Your music should bes tagged with all of the necessary information.
- Track name
- Artist name
- Single name
- Album name (if applicable)
- Genre
- Recording/Release Date
Music Libraries
We will talk about my experience with Songtradr, and AudioSparx.
- Songtradr. This happens to be my favorite platform from a usability perspective. You will need to provide song information such as genre, description and keywords as well as other metadata. Your dashboard will list of a number of Music Wanted opportunities that you can submit to for free utilizing the credits that you are allocated. I’ve come very close to having my music selected for a number of opportunities. Every time I record a new song I will be sure to add it to my profile.
- AudioSparx. I need to spend more time with this platform. I currently only have one song in this library. My goal is to have the rest of my music added before month end. I will add an update on my experience with AudioSparx soon.
Gaining Experience
Signing up and submitting your music will help you get familiarized with each library. You will be able to determine your preferences and how you wish to proceed. Please share your experiences. I will be sure to add updates as I continue to place my music with other libraries.
